Women's Soccer Falls To VCU; Qualifies For A-10 Tournament
October 14, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Minutewomen will play in the postseason for first time since 2014.
AMHERST, Mass. - Despite falling to VCU 1-0 at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon, the UMass women's soccer program will advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament for the first time since 2014. With 16 points entering the final week of the regular season, the Minutewomen received help as a La Salle loss secured one of eight spots for UMass. Even if the Explorers won both games left on the schedule, UMass would still have one more point thanks to an earlier tie at Fordham.
The loss to the Rams dropped UMass to 10-4-1 overall and 5-2-2 in league play, while the Rams improved to 12-3-0 and 7-1-0 in league play. The Minutewomen will host current league leader Saint Louis (13-3-1, 8-0-0 A-10) on Thursday afternoon before closing out the regular season next Sunday at Dayton (7-7-2, 3-4-1 A-10). The Flyers currently hold the eighth and final spot for the A-10 tournament.
In Sunday's action, both teams played a scoreless first half with the Rams having the bulk of the offensive chances thanks to a 5-to-1 shot advantage. UMass keeper Peyton Ryan made three of her five saves in the match during the opening stanza.
After the intermission, UMass earned a pair of corners in the first eight minutes, but were unable to convert. Sini Laaksonen nearly put the Minutewomen on the scoreboard in the 58th minute with a chip shot from 32 yards out. VCU keeper Audrey Sanderson was just able to punch the shot over the cross bar at the last minute as it arced down.
The Rams took the 1-0 lead in the 65th minute thanks to a goal by Samantha Jerabek from the far flank just off the goal line. Jerabek lifted a cross towards the goal mouth that managed to drop under the cross bar from the tough angle. The pass looked like it was going over the goal before it dropped into the near upper 90 for the goal.
UMass picked up the tempo from there looking for the equalizer including three shots in 78th, 79th and 80th minutes, but one sailed high and two were saved by Sanderson. The Minutewomen had one more chance in the 89th minute as Rebeca Frisk struck a loose ball that went just high of the frame.
Sanderson finished the day with five saves to match Ryan.
Both sides finished the match with nine shots, while UMass held a 6-to-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Prior to the game, the Minutewomen honored its 2018 Senior Class of Ari Comendul, Erin Doster, Paige Kozlowski, Ryan, Julia Taffuri and Jenna Thomas who have helped orchestrate one of UMass' best seasons in recent history.

Don't often tweet highlights involving the other side, but this is how close Sini Laaksonen's shot came to going in. Great save by VCU keeper Audrey Sanderson. pic.twitter.com/lo7agCuqHM
