Swimming And Diving Set To Host Fordham On Senior Day Saturday

January 25, 2018 | Men's Swimming & Diving

UMass will honor nine seniors on Saturday before their Atlantic 10 dual meet against Fordham.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts men's and women's swimming and diving team is set to host Fordham on Saturday in the Joseph R. Rogers Pool at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The meet marks the Atlantic 10 opener for the Minutemen while the Minutewomen head back into the pool after defeating Rhode Island in their league opener last week 155-119. The women's 3-Meter Dive and men's 1-Meter Dive will open up competition on Saturday at 11 a.m. before the 200 Medley Relay opens up the swimming events at 1 p.m.

The Minutemen own an 18-2 all-time series lead over the Rams as Fordham used a late push in last year's meeting to defeat UMass 156-142 in Bronx, N.Y. Trent Kindvall and Al Madden each picked up two individual event wins as Kindvall swept both dives while Madden took first in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events. Owen Wright went on to win the 50 Free as Chris DiGiacomo added a win in the 200 Back and Kyle Stefanides took first in the 100 Back.

UMass held the lead after day one of the Tate Ramsden Invitational at Dartmouth College last week before finishing second with 835.5 points. The Minutemen won three relay events during the two-day meet, including both the 200 and 400 Free Relays on the final day of competition on Saturday. Luke Gordon won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 57.42 before going on to finish second in the 200 Breaststroke while Ben Gryski added top-five finishes in both events.

The Minutewomen trail the all-time series against the Rams 9-11 with the last win coming in 2014 as Fordham won last year's meet at home 190-110 over UMass. Emma Roush won both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives to lead five event wins for UMass. Olga Egkorova won the 1,000 Free and Maddie Biron won the 100 Back while the Minutewomen posted the top time in the 200 Medley Relay behind strong swims from Biron, Chelsea Meiring, Rachel Grant and Ansley Baker.

Last time out, the Minutewomen finished second at the Tate Ramsden Invitational at Dartmouth College with 750 points as they won seven events on the final day of competition, including wins in the 200 and 400 Free Relays. Mariam Labib was part of both relay wins before going on to win the 200 Free with a time of 1:55.12 as UMass won five individual events on Saturday. Kelly Malyszka added three top-five finishes on Saturday, capping off her day with the top swim in the 400 IM for a UMass team that placed three swimmers in the top-four.

UMass will be off for a week and a half after the meet this weekend before heading to Geneva, Ohio for the A-10 Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 14-17.
