Minutemen pick up 3-0 win over visiting Hartford at Rudd Field.
AMHERST, Mass. - An early first half goal along with a pair of second half goals highlighted an offensive outburst as the UMass men's soccer team continued its strong play at Rudd Field this season defeating Hartford, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon. The win keeps the Minutemen unbeaten at home improving their record on the friendly pitch to 5-0-1 this year.
The result also marked the third shutout of the year and the second time UMass (5-2-2) has scored three goals in a match this season.
Jack Fulton opened the day's scoring in the fourth minute of play after earning his first career start with the Minutemen. The junior transfer struck the ball from just outside the eight yard box after Henry Steinkamp headed a cross to the center after receiving a pass on the right flank. It marked Fulton's second goal in as many games after scoring the equalizer in the draw at Central Connecticut State on Tuesday night.
The Minutemen held the 1-0 lead going into halftime. Just under five minutes into the second half, Davis Smith doubled the lead when he put home his second goal of the year in the 50th minute. Smith collected a cross from Matthew Mooney (2 assists) before tapping home a shot from seven-yards out to make the score 2-0.
In the 84th minute, Konrad Gorich scored on a 19-yard free kick after a foul was called on Hartford (2-5-2) just outside the 18-yard box. Gorich struck a low, driving shot just to the right of the defensive wall for his second score of the year.
Bardia Asefnia and the defense earned their third shutout of the season allowing just five shots with none on goal.
Hartford starting keeper Jimmy Slayton left the match in the seventh minute due to injury after allowing the opening goal of the day. Sean Teske made one save while allowing the other two goals.
UMass held a 9-to-4 shot advantage for the match while both teams earned three corner kicks.
The Minutemen will have a week between matches before heading to Saint Louis next Saturday, Sept. 30 to open Atlantic 10 play.
