Home Streak Continues As Men's Soccer Beats Colgate 2-1
September 16, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Minutemen improve to 4-0-1 at Rudd Field after Saturday win.
AMHERST, Mass. - Home field continues to be friendly ground for the UMass men's soccer team this season as the Minutemen defeated Colgate 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. Amherst native Davis Smith saw his first career goal, which came in the second half, stand as the game-winner improving UMass to 4-2-1 on the year.
That home unbeaten streak improved to 4-0-1 on the season which now includes two teams which played in the NCAA Tournament last season - St. Francis and the Raiders who are the defending Patriot League Champions.
This year's start to the home schedule at Rudd Field marks the Minutemen's best since posting a 6-0-0 record in 1997 through the first six home matches. The 1985 squad was a perfect 10-0-0 in home matches for the program record.
Saturday's match saw Samuel Asamoah open the scoring in the 14th minute of play. The junior carried the ball down the left flank before turning his defender for a clear run at the goal. He fired off a shot from 12-yards out that tucked inside the far post giving the Minutemen a 1-0 lead.
Colgate (3-4-0) answered in the 22nd minute when Oliver Harris collected a deflected cross from Jared Stroud before lifting a 16-yard strike to the far post for the equalizer.
After coming out of the break even at 1-1, Smith put the Minutemen back ahead in the 73rd minute as he tapped home a deflected pass from Jack Fulton for what served as the game-winner.
That goal came just nine minutes after centerback Konrad Gorich made a sliding save on the UMass goal line preventing a Freddy Jonsson attempt in traffic to keep the game tied.
UMass keeper Bardia Asefnia picked up the win making three saves in the match. His Colgate counterpart, Peter Tappenden, made six saves for the Raiders.
Overall, Colgate held a 16-to-13 advantage in shots though UMass placed eight on target compared to five for the Raiders. Colgate also held a 7-to-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Minutemen will return to action on Tuesday night at Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn., with kick-off set for 7 PM.
