Minutemen close out three-match home stand.
AMHERST, Mass. - After a 2-0 start to the 2017 campaign last weekend, the UMass men's soccer team will face a tough early season test on Friday afternoon as Columbia visits Rudd Field. The match is set for a 4 PM kick-off and will be streamed live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
Fans are encouraged to enter the Rudd Field/Sortino Softball/Track and Field Complex via the Route 116 entrance to campus due to move-in activities beginning this weekend. Attendance to the match is free to all.
Last weekend, the Minutemen opened the season with a 2-1 win over St. Francis, which reached the NCAA Tournament last year, before dispatching Sacred Heart, 3-0, on Sunday. Alex DeSantis led UMass with a pair of goals and a pair of assists in the opening two matches, while Mike Rita netted his first career goal which served as the game winner over St. Francis.
Defensively, Bardia Asefnia earned the clean sheet against the Pioneers while conceding just the one goal.
This will mark the first game of the year for the defending Ivy League champion Lions. Columbia finished the 2016 campaign with a 13-3-1 overall record. The Lions return Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year Arthur Bosua who tallied 20 points last season as a junior. Columbia's midfield also features the 2016 Ivy League Rookie of the Year in Vana Markarian. Defensively, the unit is anchored by a pair of upperclassman goalies who split time last season.
Following Friday's match, UMass will take to the road for the first time this season when the Minutemen head to New Hampshire on Tuesday night (7 PM).
