Men's Soccer Stays Unbeaten With Draw Against Columbia

Minutemen force defending Co-Ivy League champions into 1-1 tie.
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's soccer team remained unbeaten to start the 2017 campaign as the Minutemen forced a 1-1 double-overtime draw against defending Co-Ivy League champion Columbia on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field. Massachusetts moves to 2-0-1 in the early portion of the season and will head to New Hampshire on Tuesday night (7 PM).
Freshman Jared McCleary notched his first collegiate goal for the Minutemen, while Bardia Asefnia was a stalwart in goal making a career-best seven saves.
McCleary put the Minutemen up 1-0 in the 40th minute of play as he found space inside the six-yard box to tuck a loose ball inside the near post following a throw-in by Casey Hamill.
UMass took the lead into halftime and nearly tacked on another score in the 54th minute, but a Davis Smith diving header when just right of the frame.
Columbia equalized in the 73rd minute on a bending strike by John Denis that found the inside of the far post from distance.
The Minutemen had a chance to reclaim the lead later in the half as Brandon Merklin put another loose ball on target inside the six-yard box, but a Columbia defender was able to save the ball with a sliding foot save.
The first overtime saw Asefnia clean up a pair of Lions shots, while neither team was able to put a shot on target in the second overtime ending the match in a draw.
On the day, Columbia held a 16-to-9 shot advantage and a 6-to-5 edge in corner kicks. Columbia keeper Dylan Castanheira made a pair of saves in the match.
