DeSantis Leads Men's Soccer Past Sacred Heart

Senior nets two goals, assist as Minutemen start 2-0 on the year.
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Alex DeSantis had a career day with a pair of goals and an assist as the UMass men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. DeSantis played a role in each of UMass' goals helping the Minutemen start the year 2-0 for the first time since 2012.
The Minutemen will return home to close out their three-game opening home stand on Friday, Sept. 1 as Columbia visits Rudd Field. Admission and parking are free to all for the 4 p.m. match.
In addition to DeSantis' strong play, UMass keeper Bardia Asefnia recorded his first career shutout with two saves in the match. Casey Hamill had a career-high two assists helping set up both of DeSantis' goals.
The Minutemen cracked the scoreboard first when Konrad Gorich headed home a corner kick service from DeSantis in the 3rd minute of play.
Just before halftime, DeSantis picked up his first goal of the day on a header in the 49th minute. The score came on a far sideline throw-in by Hamill which was the flicked towards the near post by Davis Smith. DeSantis redirected the pass inside the near post giving UMass a 2-0 lead at the half.
In the 75th minute, DeSantis made it a 3-0 game after a transition breakdown in the Sacred Heart defensive third allowed Hamill to slot a pass down the win to Matthew Mooney. Mooney then sent a cross towards the front of the goal finding DeSantis six-yards out for the goal.
The Minutemen finished the final 11 minutes of play with a man advantage after the Pioneers lost Ezra Siyadhuba for a red card.
UMass finished the match with a 16-to-9 advantage in shots while both teams had five corner kicks.
