Two-time all-American notched 172 career points at UMass

SPARKS, Md. - University of Massachusetts alumnus and former men's lacrosse all-time great Brooks Sweet was selected for the nine-member 2017 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame induction class, as announced by US Lacrosse on Tuesday. Sweet and his classmates will be officially inducted during a Sat., Sept. 23 ceremony at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Maryland. It marks Sweet's sixth hall of fame induction, including the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame (2007) and National Junior College Hall of Fame (2008).

Brooks sparked the University of Massachusetts offense in 1978 and 1979 as the two-year letterman posted 172 points on 106 goals and 66 assists and led the team in points, goals and assists during both campaigns. Upon graduation, Sweet stood second in program history for points behind only the program's all-time leading scorer, Jeff Spooner. Sweet still ranks eighth among Minutemen historically for goals and tied for 14th in assists. He was awarded USILA All-America First Team in 1979 after he collected honorable mention in 1978.

Sweet is joined by Doug Knight, Leslie Blankin Lane, Jim McDonald, Laurette Payette, Casey Powell, Jill Johnson Redfern, Robyn Nye Wood and Don Zimmerman in the 2017 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Class.

Prior to joining the Minutemen, Sweet had an all-star prep career at Ithaca (N.Y.) High School before he began his collegiate career at SUNY Farmingdale, where Sweet was a junior college all-American in 1976 and 1977 and he helped Farmingdale to the 1977 JUCO national championship. Sweet played for Team USA in 1982 and 1986, and was named the Most Outstanding Attackman and All-World at the 1982 championship as the U.S. team captured gold. Sweet also played four professional seasons in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and was a three-time league all-star.

The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, a program of US Lacrosse, was established in 1957 to honor men and women who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of lacrosse to our way of life. Over 400 lacrosse greats are honored in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, which is located alongside the National Lacrosse Museum at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
