This weekend marks the 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament for UMass (16-3) including its ninth consecutive. Last season, the Minutewomen advanced to the Elite Eight with wins over Princeton and Cornell before being knocked out by Maryland. UMass won the first-ever NCAA sponsored national championship title in 1982 with back-to-back Final Four appearances in 1983 and 1984.
Over the last seven years, UMass has been one of the winningest programs in the NCAA. The Minutewomen sport a 127-17 overall record which is second behind Maryland (140-9). In that stretch, UMass has reached the NCAA Tournament each year while reaching at least the second round in three of the previous four seasons.
The Minutewomen have a balanced offensive attack lead by A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Holly Turner and first-team selection Hannah Burnett. Turner leads the team with 80 points on 39 goals and 41 assists, while Burnett is just behind with 71 points thanks in part to a team-best 58 goals. Callie Santos is third on the team in scoring with 40 goals and 62 points and is coming off a four-goal performance in the A-10 Championship game.
The midfield is led by All-America candidate and three-time A-10 Midfielder of the Year Hannah Murphy who has 59 points on 44 goals and 15 assists. She is the nation's leading draw specialists with 198 on the season – the third most in NCAA history for a single season. She also ranks fourth all-time in career draw controls (508) need just two more to move into third.
A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Sarah Crowley anchors the defense and proved she can add an offensive touch after scoring the game-winning goal in the league's time game. She holds a UMass single-season record with 45 caused turnovers. The defense is bolstered by all-conference second-team performers Allison Ryan and Taylor Fischer who have each produced career-best numbers this year.
The Minutewomen feature one of the nation's top offensive units ranking fourth overall with 16.11 goals per game. UMass ranks 2nd nationally in points (25.95) and assists (9.84) per game and the attack is bolstered by having the No. 1 draw unit (17.84).
The program's 493 points this season set a new single-season record at UMass alongside new records for goals per game (16.11), assists (187), and draw controls per game (17.84).
UMass and Colorado (16-3) met in the second game of the season this year with the Buffs taking an 11-7 win in a neutral site game at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. The game was tied 5-5 early in the second half before a three-goal burst by Colorado proved the difference maker.
