Home Runs Lift VCU Past Baseball, 11-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Three early home runs helped lift VCU past University of Massachusetts baseball, 11-1 in the series finale between the squads on Sunday at Earl Lorden Field. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 6-17 overall, 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improve to 19-13 and 8-1 in conference action.
VCU began the contest with a three-run first. Logan Farrar's one-out solo shot to right center opened the scoring, while Darian Carpenter hit a two-run blast after Paul Witt struck out, but reached on a wild pitch.
The Rams then pushed the margin to 6-0 courtesy of Carpenter's second home run of the day with Farrar and Witt aboard via a double and a single in the top of the third.
Haiden Lamb reached on an error and scored on an RBI ground ball by Farrar in the fourth to increase VCU's lead to 7-0 before the Rams put up four more the following inning on three hits and two errors to push the score to 11-0.
UMass' lone run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Cooper Mrowka drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single to right center by freshman Nolan Kessinger and crossed the plate when sophomore Logan Greene reached on an error.
Kessinger and junior Brett Evangelista combined for four of UMass' six hits in the contest, both going 2-for-4 at the plate on the day.
Senior Mike Geannelis started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (2-4) after letting up 11 runs, eight earned, on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts over five innings. VCU starter Michael Dailey registered the win (4-2) as he limited UMass to one run on two hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts over six innings of work.
The Minutemen continue their stretch of eight games in nine days when the squad travels to Central Connecticut for a 3 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, April 11.
