Batting Practice
- Massachusetts baseball takes on Central Connecticut on the road Tuesday at 3 p.m., before returning home for four straight games. UMass Lowell visits Amherst on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. with Atlantic 10 play stating back up again on Thursday. The Saint Louis Billikens return to Earl Lorden Field for the first time since the 2014 season. First pitch on Thursday afternoon is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's contests start at 1 p.m. and noon, respectively.
Recap in a Minute
- The Minutemen struggled offensively this weekend against Atlantic 10 foe VCU. The Rams held UMass to just one run on 10 hits, being outscored 21-1 in this weekend's three-game series. Game two was the featured game of the series, resulting in a tough 2-0 loss for UMass. Freshman LHP Brooks Knapek (2-2) went a season-long 8.2 innings in his start and allowed just one earned run on seven hits, all singles, but took the loss (2-2) for UMass with two walks and two strikeouts.
- Junior outfielder Brett Evangelista accounted for three of the Minutemen's 10 hits during the series, while freshman Nolan Kessinger tagged two hits of his own in the series finale on Sunday.
Scouting Central Connecticut State
- CCSU (16-12, 7-3 NEC) was most recently in action on Sunday, winning 3-0 in a series finale against LIU Brooklyn. The Blue Devils were able to take three of the four games, moving them up the Northeast Conference standings and into third place.
- With 32 hits and 14 RBI on the season, junior Dean Lockery (.317) has powered the Blue Devils offense through there 28 games so far. Lockery is the only CCSU player batting above the .300 mark. Teammate Ryan Costello (.233) has also been effective at the plate for CCSU, posting a team leading 11 doubles, four home runs, and 25 RBI.
- On the mound, sophomore LHP Jared Gallagher (2-1) and senior LHP Brendan Smith (2-4) have dominated their opponents. Gallagher, with a 0.50 ERA, has struck out 12 batters in 18.0 innings of relief pitched. Smith holds a 3.15 ERA in 40.0 innings pitched with 30 strikeouts over the course of seven starts.
- Charlie Hickey is now in his 18th season directing the Blue Devils baseball program. Over his tenure, Hickey has guided the Blue Devils to four Northeast Conference titles, and an NCAA Tournament appearance in each of those seasons. Under Hickey, Central has posted at least 25 wins in 13 seasons, including a school-record 41-win campaign in 2004.
Scouting UMass Lowell
- UMass Lowell (14-12, 5-3 AE) was most recently in action on Sunday, with a huge win over Albany by a score of 18-0. The River Hawks were able to take two of the three games from Albany in their America East match-up. Before facing the Minutemen, UMass Lowell will face Dartmouth at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
- Sophomore outfielder Chris Sharpe has lead the River Hawk offense this season with a .337 batting average. Sharpe leads the team with 35 hits, six home runs, three triples and 12 doubles. Teammate Colby Maiola is not far behind with a .323 batting average and a team leading 24 RBI.
- On the mound, sophomore RHP Collin Duffley (4-2) and junior RHP Andrew Ryan (3-2) have been impressive from the starting role. Duffley, with a team leading 2.38 ERA, has struck out 49 batter batters in 41.2 innings pitched. He has held opponents to a .180 batting average against him. Ryan holds a 3.02 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched with 37 strikeouts over the course of eight starts.
- Ken Harring is now in his 13th season directing the Blue Devils baseball program. Over his tenure, Harring has guided the River Hawks to four NCAA Tournament bids (2005-07, 2011) and a 12-year record of 326-251-1. The UMass Lowell baseball team transitioned to Division I with little problems in 2014, finishing third in their new conference, the America East, with an overall record of 20-22 and a 10-10 in-conference. Harring also boasts a career record of 405-360-1.
Scouting Saint Louis
- Saint Louis (19-9, 3-4 A-10) was most recently in action on Sunday, at home against Fordham in an Atlantic 10 match-up. The Billikens fell by a score of 8-1, but took Saturday's contest against the Rams by a score of 8-1. Saint Louis will face off against McKendree College on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. before traveling to Massachusetts to take on the Minutemen.
- With 38 hits, 14 doubles and 14 RBI on the season, junior Trent Leimkuehler (.342) has carried the Billikens offense through there 28 games so far. In addition, Parker Sniatynski (.290) leads all of the Atlantic 10 with 28 RBI. Leimkuehler is one of four Saint Louis players to be hitting above the .300, as they have an impressive .289 team batting average.
- On the mound, Saint Louis leads all A-10 teams with a 3.55 team ERA. They are led by sophomore LHP Miller Hogan who holds a 1.28 ERA, with a 5-0 record over eight starts. Hogan has struck out 43 batters in 52.0 innings pitched. Ryan Lefner has earned the closing role, with a team leading six saves.
- Darin Hendrickson is now in his eighth season directing the Billikens baseball program. Hendrickson ranks 14th among all active Division I head coaches, with a career win percentage of .661. Over his tenure, Hendrickson has guided Saint Louis to four Atlantic 10 titles (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In his career, Hendrickson has coached 33 players who have been either drafted in the Major League Baseball draft or signed free-agent contracts.
Brooks Knapek Shinning on the Mound
- Freshman LHP Brooks Knapek was one out away from throwing a complete game on Sunday against VCU. This was Knapek's fourth appearance this season that lasted 7.0 innings or more. The Slingerlands, New York native has struck out 33 batters in 37.1 innings pitched, holding his opponents to a .248 batting average. He leads all Minutemen starters this season with a 2.89 ERA over the course of six starts.
Getting It Done In The Classroom
- Eight members of the UMass baseball team were recognized last month for their academic success with placement on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll. In total, UMass as an institution had 165 student-athletes earn a spot on the list.
- Casey Aubin, Brett Evangelista, Kevin Hassett, Matt Hosman, Justin Lasko, Bryce Maher, Cooper Mrowka and Dylan Robinson, garnered the laurels for UMass baseball.
Set in `Stone'
- The winningest head coach in team history, UMass skipper Mike Stone embarks on his 30th season directing the Minutemen baseball program. In the summer of 2016, Stone announced that he would retire from coaching following the 2017 season. During his career in Amherst, Stone has helped UMass to 688 victories with eight Atlantic 10 regular season championships, along with two A-10 postseason titles and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Nearly 40 of his former players have gone on to play professional baseball.
Nine is Fine
- Throughout the 2017 season, the Minutemen will play in nine different states: North Carolina, Florida, Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New York. After Tuesday's game at Central Connecticut State the Minutemen have played in six of these states.
On Deck
-After this weekend's series against Saint Louis the Minutemen play five straight games on the road. First, they head to Connecticut to take on UConn at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. On Wednesday, UMass will face Northeastern in a Beanpot consolation game at 3 p.m. in Boston. Next weekend, the Minutemen will pay three games against the La Salle Explorers on the road. The games are set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
