Baseball Rolls Past CCSU, 15-0

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball pounded out 15 runs on 15 hits, rolling to a 15-0 victory over Central Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field. The win moves the Minutemen to 7-17 on the season, while the Blue Devils fall to 16-13.
 
UMass opened the contest with a 2-0 lead. Junior Brett Evangelista was hit by a pitch to start the first and sophomore Ryan Lever knocked a one-out, two-run home run over the fence in left.
 
The Minutemen added four more runs in the top of the second. Junior Andrew Noonan legged out an infield single and crossed the plate on an RBI single to center by redshirt sophomore Dylan Robinson. With Evangelista and Robinson aboard, Lever belted a three-run homer to push the score to 6-0.
 
In the top of the third, sophomore Cooper Mrowka doubled, moved to third on a ground ball and scored on an error for UMass' seventh run.
 
The Minutemen went on to put up six more runs in the sixth, capped by a two-RBI triple from Kessinger. Kessinger drove in another with a double in the sixth as UMass pushed its advantage to 15-0 with two runs in the inning.
 
Lever finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore Matt Hosman added three RBI and Kessinger was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and a run scored.
 
Junior Kevin Hassett started on the mound for the Minutemen and picked up the win (2-2) after tossing six shutout innings and scattering seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Arik Sypher took the loss for the Blue Devils as he surrendered six runs on six hits over 1.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
 
The Minutemen will be back in action tomorrow, April 12, when the squad will play host to UMass Lowell at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
