Hockey Signs Oliver Chau to NLI

April 17, 2017 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. - Oliver Chau, a 5-9, 165-pound forward from Oakville, Ontario, has signed his National Letter of Intent with the University of Massachusetts hockey program, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Monday. Chau, the 2017 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Rookie of the Year, joins forwards Mitchell Chaffee, Jake Gaudet, Phillip Lagunov, John Leonard and George Mika, defensemen Mario Ferraro and Cale Makar and goaltender Matthew Murray as the ninth member of the Minutemen's Class of 2021.

"Oliver quickly proved himself in the AJHL with the Brooks Bandits by earning league rookie of the year honors," said Carvel. "He is an undersized player with tremendous quickness and hockey sense. He is an offensive-minded player that creates offense and knows where to be around the net to score. He will have to continue working on his strength and ability to battle, but his potential to be an offensive catalyst is promising. Oliver is a bright kid who is a strong student and is a cerebral hockey player as well."

During the regular season with the Brooks Bandits in the AJHL in 2016-17, Chau amassed 87 points over 60 games on 35 goals and 52 assists to collect all-league and all-rookie honors in addition to his rookie of the year accolade. He led the AJHL in power-play goals with 18, a Brooks Bandits' record, and ranked third in the league in goals, fourth in points. Through 11 postseason games to date Chau, has 14 points on two goals and 12 assists.

Prior to playing in Brooks, Chau spent two years (2014-16) in Western Massachusetts at nearby Northfield Mount Hermon School where he logged 25 goals and 23 assists for 48 points in 45 games.
