Trio of Minutewomen post hat tricks; Hannah Murphy nets 100th career goal.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A four-goal run in the first six minutes of play set the tone early as the UMass women's lacrosse team picked up a 16-9 win at Harvard on a chilly Wednesday night at Harvard Stadium. Hannah Murphy recorded her 100th career goal in the contest while also moving into ninth in the all-time NCAA rankings for career draw controls (363).
The win marked the third straight for UMass (4-3) which will host Marist on Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.) at Garber Field as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
Hannah Burnett led the Minutewomen in the scoring column with four goals giving the redshirt junior 13 in the last three games. Holly Turner led all scorers with six points on two goals and four assists. Kiley Anderson and Murphy each scored three goals with Murphy also hauling in a game-high 11 draw controls. Kaitlyn Cerasi rounded out the top offensive performers with two goals and two assists.
Defensively, Sarah Crowley posted three caused turnovers and three groundballs while goalie Lauren Hiller made 11 saves for the win.
Harvard (4-3) was led by Maeve McMahon who had four goals, an assist and five draw controls. Keeley MacAfee and Marisa Romeo each had two goals. Meredith Brown took the loss in goal while making 12 saves.
The Minutewomen held a 33-to-25 shot advantage and held a 17-to-10 edge in draw controls for the game.
The game opened with the Crimson scoring the first goal of the night just over two minutes into play. Crowley responded right after to tie the game with her first goal of the season before Murphy gave UMass a 2-1 lead 36 seconds later. Another quick strike by Cerasi on the ensuing draw control made it 3-1 at the 26:24 mark.
After Burnett's first goal of the day made it 4-1 at the 24:33 mark, Harvard got back on the board. The Minutewomen responded with a three goal run making it 7-2 at the 16:24 mark.
UMass took a 10-5 lead into halftime and, despite the single-digit weather, came out of the locker room on another hot streak scoring the first four goals of the second half to go up 14-5 with just under 11 minutes to go.
Harvard then went on a three-goal run, but Ashley Faulhaber scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot to break-up the streak. Both teams traded goals in the final four minutes to give the final score.
