Men’s Soccer Falls On Rudd For First Time To Fordham, 3-2

UMass looked to rally late down 3-1 but fell short in the lone regular season loss at home.
AMHERST, MASS. – The No. 25-ranked University of Massachusetts men's soccer dropped their first game on their home grass at Rudd Field as they fell to Fordham in the regular season finale on Senior Day, 3-2. The Minutemen (12-3-3, Overall, 6-1-1 A-10) will learn their seeding for the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals and will host the opening match of the tournament at Rudd Field.
Alex DeSantis scored his eighth goal of the season as UMass jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over Fordham (11-4-2 Overall, 5-2-1 A-10) in the ninth minute of the match. Konrad Gorich sent a corner kick to the far post for Brandon Merklin, who redirected the pass across net to a cutting DeSantis for the goal.
The Rams rallied to tie things up at 1-1 on a goal from Janos Loebe that deflected off a defender and into the corner of the net in the 14th-minute. Fordham extended their lead with goals in the 55th and 69th-minute to go ahead 3-1.
Jack Fulton cut the lead down to a goal to set up a late push for the Minutemen, sending home a free kick from 10 yards outside of the box in the 73rd minute as he picked up his sixth goal of the year.
The Minutemen turned up the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the contest as Gorich and Fulton both had good looks at the net but could not convert.
Brandon Merklin came through for the Minutemen defense late in the contest to keep it a one goal game, rotating into net in the 86th minute to clear it away with his foot to give UMass another chance on offense.
UMass outshot Fordham 17-16 in the contest, putting 10 of their 17 shots on net to force opposing goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu to make eight saves. Bardia Asefnia picked up three saves in net for UMass while facing six shots on target.
The Minutemen will find out their seeding for the upcoming conference tournament this evening when the final conference regular season games conclude.
