Men’s Soccer Hosts Saint Louis For A-10 Quarterfinals Tomorrow

No. 1-seed UMass hosts Saint Louis at 1 p.m. on Rudd Field in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament.
AMHERST, Mass. –The No. 25-ranked and top-seeded University of Massachusetts men's soccer team is set to host No. 8-seeded Saint Louis tomorrow for the A-10 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at 1 p.m. at Rudd Field. The match marks the third year in a row that the Minutemen (12-3-3 Overall, 6-1-1 A-10) have qualified for the league tournament and marks the third time UMass has taken on Saint Louis (7-8-1 Overall, 4-4-0 A-10) in the tournament.
UMass last faced Saint Louis in the conference tournament back in 2013, falling to the Billikens 2-0 in the quarterfinals after beating them 2-0 in the semifinals in 2008. The all-time series between the two squads is knotted at 5-5-2 with the Minutemen winning on the road this season in the head-to-head behind two goals from Davis Smith and one from Alex DeSantis.
Smith, a freshman forward from Amherst, Mass., leads UMass in points with 23 and goals with nine while tie for the team-lead in assists. Smith ranks tied for third in the A-10 in goals and points heading into the upcoming tournament.
Defensively, the Minutemen own a 1.02 goals against average through 18 regular season contests, anchored in net by goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia. Asefnia's 1.02 goals against average ranks third in the league while the senior has tallied 57 saves and three solo shutouts.
UMass earned the top seed in the tournament by picking up 19 points in league play on the season on their way to winning the regular season crown for the first time since 2008 and for the fifth time in program history.
The winner of Sunday's contest will take on the winner of the No. 4-seed Dayton and No. 5-seed Fordham in the semifinals of the tournament to be held at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio on Nov. 10 with the finals scheduled to be held two days later. The Minutemen won their last conference tournament title on Bajuan Field in 2007 by defeating Dayton, Rhode Island and Charlotte.
