Women's Soccer Falls 3-0 At Saint Louis
October 19, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Minutewomen close regular-season Sunday at home vs. Dayton.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Second-place Saint Louis used a strong offensive attack in the first half en route to a 3-0 win over the UMass women's soccer team on Thursday night at Hermann Stadium. The loss drops the Minutewomen into eighth in the Atlantic 10 standings heading into Sunday's regular-season finale at Rudd Field against Dayton (1 PM).
The Billikens (15-1-2, 7-1-1 A-10) remain in second place after the win. UMass (7-8-2, 4-4-1 A-10) holds the final A-10 tournament spot just two points ahead of the Flyers. A win on Sunday against Dayton could move UMass up into seventh place, while a loss could keep the Minutewomen out of postseason play.
In Thursday's match, SLU used a 16-to-0 shot advantage in the first half to build a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Courtney Reimer tallied her second goal of the year in the 25th minute, while Alli Klug notched the second Billiken goal nearly nine minutes later.
The third goal of the night came off a bit of misfortune for the Minutewomen. A hard shot by Kelly Marra glanced off the crossbar springing a Saint Louis counter attack. Lindsay Sands sent a through ball to a streaking Evie Lavelle who evaded a charging UMass keeper Cassidy Babin before tapping home a shot on the empty goal.
Babin made nine saves in the match and was replaced for nearly nine minutes in the first half by Peyton Ryan after suffering an injury on a SLU set piece. Billiken keeper Mary Niehaus made four saves in the win.
