Women's Soccer Season Ends With 3-1 Loss To Dayton

October 22, 2017 | Women's Soccer

Jenna Thomas nets goal in 80th minute, but Minutewomen unable to rally at home.

AMHERST, Mass. - A pair of goals in the opening 25 minutes of play proved the difference maker as Dayton earned a 3-1 win over the UMass women's soccer team at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon. The win solidifies a playoff spot for the Flyers in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament while knocking the Minutewomen out of contention for postseason play.

Prior to the match, UMass honored its 2017 senior class of Salma Anastasio, Cassidy Babin, Danielle Farano, Gabriella Kenyon and Natalie Perussault.

Jenna Thomas notched the lone goal for the Minutewomen (7-9-2, 4-5-1 A-10) in the 80th minute after tapping home a corner kick service that was deflected her way by Erin Doster and Paige Kozlowski. It marked the center back's third goal of the year - all coming in the final six matches of the season.

Dayton (9-8-2, 4-4-2 A-10) jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Micayla Livingston in the ninth minute of play after a corner kick service was played through the box to the back post. Livingston re-directed the low pass back towards the near post giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, Keagin Collie scored to give Dayton a 2-0 lead for the remainder of the first half.

After the intermission, UMass put the Flyers under pressure with three shots in the first 13 minutes of action. Dayton keeper Kaelyn Johns kept the Minutewomen at bay with a pair of saves in the flurry.

The Flyers added an insurance goal in the 65th minute after defender Beth Kamphaus played a long, direct pass ahead to Alexis Kiehl who had split a pair of defenders in transition. Babin charged off her line, but Kiehl was the first to the ball managing to chip a shot from 25-yards out for the 3-0 lead.

After Thomas' goal, the Minutewomen managed three more shots but could not crack the Dayton defense.

Johns finished the day with six saves in the win. Babin made one save in 73 minutes of work before being lifted by Peyton Ryan for the final 17 minutes of action. Peyton finished the match with a pair of saves.

Babin concluded her UMass career playing in 59 matches for over 5,400 minutes while posting 17 shutouts.

Overall in the match, UMass held a 12-to-11 edge in shots and a 4-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
