Swimming And Diving To Take On Army Friday

UMass heads into Friday’s meet with the men having won the Colgate Invitational last week with the women’s team finishing second

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set for a road head-to-head matchup against Army tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Crandall Pool in West Point, N.Y. The Minutemen are coming off a first-place showing at the Colgate Invitational last weekend while the Minutewomen finished second in the competition.
 
The UMass men's swimming and diving team picked up 11 event wins at Colgate on Friday and Saturday, including relay wins in the 200 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay as they picked up 1114.5 points on their way to winning the event handily.
 
Owen Wright, the Atlantic 10 Men's Performer of the Week, won individual titles in the 50 Free and the 100 IM to go along with his relay wins as he earned the weekly honor. Newcomer Seamus Trzewik-Quinn opened his collegiate career with a runner-up finish on Friday in the 200 IM behind teammate and winner Chris DiGiacomo before winning the opening event on Saturday with a meet-record swim of 4:14.03 in the 400 IM.
 
The Minutewomen finished as the runner up at Colgate with a score of 711 behind strong performances out of Emma Roush and Kelly Malyszka. Roush earned the Atlantic 10 Women's Performer of the Week honor after winning both of her dives, posting meet records in both the 1-Meter Dive with a score of 299.00 and the 3-Meter Dive with 289.45. Malyszka set three meet records in the 500 Free with a time of 5:04.60 on Friday and in both the 400 IM and 1650 Free on Saturday.
 
Last season against Army at home in Rogers Pool, both the men and the women were defeated as the Minutemen fell 188-110 while the Minutewomen were outscored 171-127. Ansley Baker provided a first-place finish for UMass as she won the 100 Breaststroke while Roush and Maja Boric combined to win both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives. Olga Egkorova added a second-place finish in the 1000 Free and a third-place finish in the 200 Fly for UMass.
 
On the men's side, Wright posted second and third place finishes in the 50 and 100 Free while Oliver Wyeth finished third in the 200 Free and second in the 200 Back. Trent Kindvall helped UMass sweep both dives as he took first place in the 1-Meter before finishing as the runner-up in the 3-Meter.
 
UMass will come home to Rogers Pool on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. to host Vermont.
