October 01, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Minutewomen conclude successful A-10 road trip with four-point weekend.
RICHMOND, Va. - A great defensive effort provided the UMass women's soccer team a 0-0 double-overtime draw against VCU on Sunday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium. The scoreless match gave the Minutewomen a total four points on the weekend after Thursday night's win at St. Bonaventure moving the program in the top third of the standings.
The Minutewomen (5-5-2, 2-1-1 A-10) will return to action with a pair of home matches at Rudd Field this week. On Thursday, Oct. 5, UMass will host Rhode Island (4 PM) before welcoming La Salle on Sunday, Oct. 8 (1 PM). Admission is free to both events.
After both teams battled through a scoreless regulation, Sini Laaksonen nearly gave UMass the win in the 100th minute putting a shot on frame that forced a save by VCU keeper Audrey Sanderson. The Minutewomen had one more chance to pick up the win in the 110th minute when Jenny Hipp sliced through a pair of defenders along the goalline before closing in on the goal. She fired a low shot at a tough angle in the final seconds of play with Sanderson once again making the save to preserve the tie.
Though the Rams were credited for 22 shots in the match, only three were on target with UMass keeper Cassidy Babin making two saves. The Minutewomen posted nine shots with four on goal. VCU held a 9-to-3 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
Sanderson finished the match with four saves for the Rams.
