Women's Soccer Hosts Central Michigan Sunday at Rudd Field
September 08, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Minutewomen and Chippewas set for Noon kickoff.
AMHERST, Massachusetts - After what will be a full week between games, the UMass women's soccer team returns to action on Sunday afternoon when the Minutewomen play host to Central Michigan at Rudd Field. The match is set for 12 p.m., with the Chippewas entering as one of the hot teams in college soccer to start the 2016 season.
The Minutewomen picked up a win over Maine last Saturday to improve to 2-2 on the year, while Central Michigan has jumped out of the gates to a 5-0 record heading into its match at Dartmouth on Friday night. The undefeated start for CMU gives UMass one of the toughest opening five game stretches of opponents as its foes have entered games against the Minutewomen with a combined 12-3 overall record. Included in that group is South Florida which is up to No. 14 in this week's NSCAA Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Attendance and parking is free as always and the game will be streamed live on www.UMassAthletics.com through the UMass/Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
UMass was originally slated to host Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night, but the match was cancelled earlier this week and will not be made up. Following the Central Michigan match, the Minutewomen will begin a four-game road trip including a pair of matches at Brown and Providence next week to close out the non-conference schedule.
In last Saturday's win over Maine, Gabriela Kenyon scored the gamewinner against the Black Bears with her strike in the 23rd minute. Keeper Cassidy Babin notched her second shutout of the season as the defense held Maine to eight shots overall for the match.
Along with Kenyon, UMass has received goals this year from Megan Burke and Rebeca Frisk. Salma Anastasio leads the team in assists with two.
With the shutout win, Babin lowered her goals-against-average this year to 1.75 while posting a 0.731 save percentage through four matches.
Central Michigan has been impressive defensively this year allowing just three goals - all in the second half - while its offense has generated 12 scores.
Alexis Pelafas has become one of the nation's top scorers with a team-best seven goals so far, while Jamie Rademacher has two goals and two assists. Kristen Knutson has started all five games in goal sporting a 0.42 goals-against-average and a 0.857 save percentage.
