September 11, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Early goals help Chippewas get past Minutewomen to stay perfect on season.
AMHERST, Massachusetts - Alexis Pelafas scored a pair of goals to help keep Central Michigan unbeaten as the Chippewas defeated the UMass women's soccer team 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The win improved CMU to 7-0-0 as one of the hot teams early this season, while UMass fell to 2-3-0 overall.
Gabriela Kenyon scored the lone goal for UMass in the 61st minute for her second tally of the year. Keeper Cassidy Babin made four saves in the loss.
The scoring opened early in the match as Pelafas notched the first goal of the day in the fourth minute. Jamie Rademacher sent a cross from the right flank to Eliza Van De Kerkhove who then slotted a nice feed to Pelafas. She fired from five yards out inside the left post for the early 1-0 lead.
Central Michigan doubled the score in the 32nd minute on a Meghan Sweeney header after Babin deflected a hard cross by McKay Matheson.
Kenyon's goal boosted the energy of the Minutewomen after several dangerous chances had previously missed. The Chippewas responded, however, to push the lead back to two goals when Pelafas scored from eight yards out in the 68th minute to give the final score.
The Minutewomen held a slight 12-to-11 edge in shots and a 5-to-3 advantage in corner kicks. CMU keeper Kristen Knutson made six saves in the win.
UMass will play a pair of matches in Rhode Island this week with a Thursday evening contest at Brown (7 p.m.) and a Sunday meeting with Providence (6 p.m.).
