Goncalves Golden Goal Gives Men's Soccer 3-2 OT Win at Hartford

September 24, 2016 | Men's Soccer

Senior co-captain scores on a penalty kick giving UMass its second win in last three matches.

WEST HARTFORD, Connecticut - A scoreless first half followed by a four-goal second half paved the way for a Ty Goncalves Golden Goal in the 97th minute of play as the UMass men's soccer team defeated Hartford 3-2 in overtime at Al-Marzook Field.

For Goncalves, it was his fifth career goal and first gamewinner. The Minutemen (2-6-1) earned a penalty kick after Kevin Boino was fouled inside the 18-yard box as he chased a long forwarding pass. With the ball placed, Goncalves shot to the right as Hartford goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton dove left giving the Minutemen the victory.

After a scoreless first half, Hartford (3-4-1) broke the deadlock just 91 seconds into the second half. Quenton Swift one-timed a low-heavy shot from nearly 23 yards out tucking the blast inside the left post and past a diving Jorge Becerra.

A pair of first career goals from the Minutemen gave UMass the lead down the stretch. Konrad Gorich scored the first goal for UMass in the 60th minute as he knocked home a loose ball following a sideline throw-in to tie the match. Fellow defender Josh Jess, who leads the Minutemen with 62 matches played, scored his first career goal in the 70th minute putting UMass ahead 2-1.

Both teams kept battling for the next goal, but it was Hartford that found the equalizer late. The Hawks used another shot from distance to tie the match in the 88th minute when Andre Morrison evaded several tackles before sending a left-footed shot from beyond the 18-yard box into the right side of the goal.

Becerra made one save in goal for UMass, while Slayton made the same for the Hawks.

The match marked the second overtime contest of the year for the Minutemen who tied Saint Peter's 1-1 earlier this month. After averaging just under a goal in the first six matches of the season, UMass is averaging just over two in the last three outings with a 2-1 record in that stretch.

The Minutemen will have a week off before hosting Dayton next Saturday, Oct. 1 at Rudd Field. The 1 p.m. kickoff for the Atlantic 10 opener is free to attend and will be streamed live on the UMass/A-10 Digital Network.
