Men's Soccer Battles Dayton to 0-0 Overtime Draw

Minutemen and Flyers open Atlantic 10 schedule with defensive standoff.
AMHERST, Massachusetts - In the Atlantic 10 opener for both sides, defense was the central theme as the UMass men's soccer team battled defending league champion Dayton to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field.
With the result, UMass now stands at 2-6-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the A-10, while Dayton moves to 3-5-2 overall and 0-0-1 in league play. The Minutemen will close out their non-conference slate on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Rudd Field against Central Connecticut State (4 p.m.).
The opening half saw Dayton with a bevy of early chances in the match. The Flyers held a 10-to-6 shot advantage and earned nine of the 10 corner kicks for the contest in the opening stanza.
UMass' best chance came in the 28th minute of play when Matt Mooney ripped a shot from the left flank that appeared to be curving into the upper right corner, but the blast glanced off the cross bar.
In the second half, the Flyers had a chance to win the match in regulation with a corner kick in the 89th minute, but Coletun Long's header in the box was just wide of the target.
The Minutemen carried play in the first overtime with a 3-to-1 shot advantage but were unable to find the Golden Goal. The Flyers attempted the only shot in the second overtime period.
For the match, Dayton held a slim 17-to-16 shot advantage and a 10-to-7 edge in corner kicks.
UMass keeper Jorge Becerra made four saves for his third shutout of the season. Federico Barrios made two saves in goal for Dayton.
