Providence Hands Women's Soccer 3-0 Setback
September 18, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Friars score pair of goals in first half, add another in second.
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - A pair of goals from Rachel Ugolik and another from Kathryn Hiller gave Providence a 3-0 win over the UMass women's soccer team on Sunday night at Chapey Field. Ugolik notched both her goals in the first half before Hiller added another in the second.
The loss drops the Minutewomen to 2-4-1 overall to close out the non-conference schedule. UMass will have 11 days off before opening Atlantic 10 play on Thursday, Sept. 29 at La Salle. Providence improved to 6-3-1 overall with the win.
Ugolik put the Friars on the board in the 31st minute on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box directed at the bottom of the crossbar. UMass keeper Cassidy Babin made a leaping attempt to knock the ball over, but despite getting her finger tips on it, the shot had enough steam to continue into the net.
Babin made a tremendous save just a few moments later when a 2-on-1 situation developed inside the 18-yard box. She read a centering pass well to make a point blank save.
The Friars went up 2-0 on Ugolik's second goal of the night in the 44th minute. Ugolik was able to collect a loose ball on the right flank after several shot attempts had been deflected away by the UMass defense. The third try of the possession off her foot managed to tuck inside the right post past a diving effort from Babin.
UMass attacked early in the second half with a quick shot attempt by Daniela Alvarez, but the Friars tacked on their third goal in the 57th minute. Despite being outshot 13-to-2 in the first half, UMass tied Providence 7-to-7 for shots in the second half.
Providence also held a 6-to-4 edge in corner kicks for the match.
