La Salle Hands Women's Soccer 1-0 Overtime Loss in A-10 Opener

Explorers score game-winning goal in 107th minute.
PHILADELPHIA - Maci Bower scored in the 107th minute of play as the La Salle Explorers defeated the UMass women's soccer team 1-0 in double overtime on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium. The match was the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams this weekend as the Minutewomen (2-5-1, 0-1-0 A-10) will return to action on the road at Richmond on Sunday afternoon.
Bower's goal was set-up by Deja Davis who intercepted a UMass passes before sending a through ball back ahead. Bower was able to connect with the pass to score the game-winner with 3:36 left in the second overtime period.
Cassidy Babin made a season-high eight saves taking the loss in goal for UMass. Her counterpart, Larisa Zambelli, made four saves for the Explorers (3-6-0, 1-0-0 A-10).
For the match, La Salle outshot UMass 17-to-7 though the first half was close with just a three-shot differential for the Explorers. The paced picked up in the second half with La Salle holding an 8-to-4 edge in shots.
In the final 22 minutes of regulation, UMass peppered four shots on goal with a pair from Laura Johns, another from Julia Weithofer and the final one in the 85th minute by Gabriela Kenyon, but were unable to find the game-winner. La Salle also tried to force the issue in the final 10 minutes earning three of seven corner kicks in the match while logging six of their eight second half shots in the span. Babin was called upon to make three saves in that stretch to edge regulation in a deadlock.
The first overtime saw both teams get just one shot off each. Kyleigh Crist had the chance for UMass in the 99th minute, but Zambelli was there to make the save.
La Salle had a pair of corner kicks and a pair of saves in the first six minutes of the second overtime. Babin saved an attempt in the 104th minute, while a header by Davis whistled just left of target in the 106th minute. The Minutewomen were unable to generate any shot attempts of their own before Bower ended the match with her Golden Goal.
