Women’s Soccer Battles Brown to 0-0 Draw

September 15, 2016 | Women's Soccer

Minutewomen and Bears stay scoreless in defensive tilt.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite several quality chances for both sides, the UMass women's soccer team battled a tough, defensive minded Brown squad to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Stadium.

The draw improves UMass to 2-3-1 overall, while Brown moves to 3-1-2 overall having conceded just one goal in those six matches.

In the first half, the Minutewomen had one of the more dangerous opportunities in the 41st minute on its first corner kick of the night. Alyssa Fratarcangeli triggered the kick towards the top of the 18-yard box where Daniela Alvarez headed it towards the back post. The shot found its way through traffic, but was cleared off the line by the Brown defense.

The Bears opened second half with a threatening header in the 48th minute as Celia Story headed a shot on frame that forced a diving save from Cassidy Babin. Story also nearly scored in the first half on a shot just outside the six-yard box that pushed just right of the far post.

In the 73rd minute, Erin Doster's bid to put UMass up a goal also skidded just wide of the frame. She fired a close range shot from the right flank aiming for the far post and her shot was just a foot too far to the left.

Laura Johns and Salma Anastasio each had shots in the 86th minute from 18-yards out that went just left of the near post.

With four seconds left in regulation, Daniela Alvarez was able to charge through the middle of the offensive third to receive a pass from Rebeca Frisk. She carried the ball to the top of the 18-yard box before loosing a shot that was saved by Brown keeper Christine Etzel.

In the 91st minute, Brown earned a corner kick which was re-directed on target. Julia Weithofer was able to block and then clear the shot from danger.

Brown managed two more shots including one saved by Babin, but the Minutewomen were able to keep the board clean to force a second overtime.

The second overtime saw UMass earn an early corner kick opportunity followed by a free kick just to the near side of the 18-yard box, but the Minutewomen were unable to covert either chance.

The Bears followed that with shots in the 105th and 107th minutes, but both went wide of frame.

For the match, Brown held a 12-to-9 edge in shots and a 5-to-4 advantage in corners. Babin finished the night with three saves to earn her third shutout of the season, while Christine Etzel made four saves.
