Alex DeSantis nets goal for Minutemen in the 30th minute.
BOSTON – A goal by Alex DeSantis in the 30th minute tied Saturday night's match, but a Boston University goal nine minutes later stood as the deciding factor in the Terriers' 2-1 win at Nickerson Field. The Minutemen had several quality chances to equalize in the second half, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
The loss drops UMass to 0-4-1 overall, while Boston University improves to 1-1. The Minutemen will return to action on Tuesday afternoon against Albany at Rudd Field. The game will be streamed live at www.UMassAthletics.com. Parking and admission are free to all.
The Terriers opened the scoring on Saturday taking a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute after Mark Wadid sent a free kick from the right flank towards the back post. David Asbjornsson was able to crash down the sideline to re-direct the cross inside the post for the score.
DeSantis tied the match in the 30th minute with a header that snuck just past Boston University keeper Matt Gilbert. Brandon Merklin started the play with a throw-in that was headed by Josh Jess towards DeSantis.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Terriers were able to re-take the lead in the 39th minute when Anthony Viteri turned and fired a low, hard left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box through traffic. UMass keeper Jorge Becerra made a diving attempt, but the skidding shot took a tricky bounce off the surface over his outstretched glove for the goal.
The Minutemen had several good chances to equalize in the second half with four shots, but were unable to connect.
Becerra finished the match making three saves, while Gilbert made two for the Terriers.
