Minutemen face No. 6 Syracuse on Friday; play at Colgate on Sunday
AMHERST, Massachusetts - The 2016 season officially opens this weekend as the UMass men's soccer teams takes to the road for a pair of matches this weekend. On Friday night, the Minutemen will face No. 6 Syracuse before then taking on Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
Friday's game at the Orange (7 p.m.), who are coming off a 2015 College Cup appearance, will be televised in the local Syracuse area on Time Warner Sports and nationally on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app. The Colgate game (4 p.m.) will be streamed live for free on the Patriot League Digital Network.
The Minutemen are coming off a 3-1 exhibition win over Bryant at Rudd Field last Saturday. Sophomore Samuel Asamoah, junior Alex DeSantis and junior Henry Steinkamp each scored second half goals for UMass.
After a tough start to the 2015 campaign, UMass closed out the year with a 4-2-1 record to finish tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 standings earning a spot in the postseason tournament. The Minutemen posted an unbeaten league record at Rudd Field with a 3-0-1 mark.
The Minutemen return nine starters from last year's team including co-captains Ty Goncalves and Matthew Mooney. Goalkeeper Jorge Becerra also returns in net after a strong finish to the 2015 season. In the final seven games of the year, he posted a pair of shutouts and a 3-3-2 record.
Joining the veteran returning players is a talented group of 11 newcomers. Forward Andrew Barrowman was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Rookie Team earlier this week. Sophomore Konrad Gorich is expected to be an impact centerback for the Minutemen. The 6-foot-4 native of Munich, Germany adds a mature, veteran presence to the defense, while 6-foot-3 freshman Ryan Saul of New Jersey will also add size in the defensive third.
In Fran O'Leary's second year, the Minutemen figure to continue building upon the momentum with which they finished 2015. Between a starting line-up of veteran players and the influx of new talent, the 2016 season should stand as a good barometer of progress.
