No. 6 Orange Down Men's Soccer 3-0 With Second Half Goals
August 26, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Minutemen play well against Syracuse but unable to penetrate veteran defense
SYRACUSE, New York - No. 6 Syracuse scored three times in the second half as the Orange defeated the UMass men's soccer team 3-0 on Friday night at the SU Soccer Complex. The two sides went into halftime knotted up 0-0, but Syracuse, coming off a 2015 College Cup appearance, was able to generate sustained offensive pressure throughout the second half.
The Minutemen (0-1) will return to action on Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) at Colgate. The game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Digital Network for free. Live stats will also be available for the match.
Despite the outcome of Friday's season-opening match, the Minutemen were able to hold an attacking Orange side at bay for the first half. Jorge Becerra made several critical saves and the UMass defense was able to clear out any other dangerous balls. Offensive, UMass tried to play long ball in transition, but a veteran Syracuse defense was able to control the play in the air to limit the Minutemen's possessions.
In the second half, Syracuse (1-0) ended the deadlock in the 49th minute when Chris Nanco took possession down the left flank, cut inside a defender and then slotted a low hard shot that clanked off the inside of the far post.
Ten minutes later, the lead increased to 2-0 after another attack was built down the left flank. Liam Callahan loosed a shot that was deflected off a UMass defender and past a charging Becerra.
In the 65th minute, UMass earned a corner kick, but was unable to convert any clean scoring chances. Syracuse came back six minutes later with a score off a corner of its own. Playing the ball short, Kenny Lassiter was able to crash the near post to redirect a shot from Sergio Camargo for the goal.
For the match, Syracuse outshot UMass 21-to-3 and held an 5-to-1 advantage in corners.
Becerra made eight saves for UMass, while Hendrik Hilpert made one for Syracuse.
