May 04, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department announced its spring semester scholar-athlete award winners Wednesday as rowing senior Sam Kolovson and men’s lacrosse redshirt-junior Dan Muller earned the honors. Kolovson and Muller were recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wed., May 4.
Kolovson, a member of the UMass Honor’s College, will graduate with a degree in computer science in the Spring, 2016. She will begin work on a PhD in human centered design and engineering at the University of Washington in the fall. The Atlantic 10 Conference previously recognized Kolovson for her academic success with inclusion on the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Outside of the classroom, Kolovson earned experience in the field with internships in the University of Massachusetts OIT Department as a Junior Web Developer and in Research Experience for Undergraduates. She is also a three-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and served on the E-Board for the previous two years.
On the race course, Kolovson helped head coach Jim Dietz guide the Minutewomen to a pair of Atlantic 10 Championships in 2014 and 2015 as a member of the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats. Recently, she took home a silver medal at the prestigious Head of the Charles in the Club Singles, which earned UMass an automatic reentry into the 2016 holding of the world-renowned event.
Muller, who studies finance, received the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Academic Achievement Award as a sophomore in 2014 and previously earned Dean’s List honors from UMass.
On the field for Greg Cannella’s Minutemen, Muller is a two-year starter on the first midfield line. A dynamic player, Muller also sees time on the clear and ride unit and is capable of switching into a short-stick defensive midfield role as a result.
Muller is the current leader among active Minutemen with 51 career points (33 goals, 18 assists). He finished the 2016 season tied for third on the squad and tied for first among midfielders with 17 points via 10 goals and seven assists. Since he returned from a knee injury suffered in 2014 that forced him to miss the entire spring campaign Muller owns at least one point in 23 of his 28 appearances.
