Hofstra Takes 10-9 Win from Massachusetts in Overtime
April 23, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse sophomore Buddy Carr scored a game-tying goal with 23 seconds left to force overtime, but Hofstra's Brendan Kavanagh answered in the extra frame to seal a 10-9 victory for the Pride at Garber Field on Saturday.
Kavanagh found space as he raced from X near the right post and placed a low shot beyond UMass goalie Sean Sconone to end overtime with 14 seconds remaining. Sconone, a freshman, ended the day with 13 saves in net, including one to prolong overtime.
It marked the third straight Hofstra goal Kavanagh factored into as he dished consecutive assists to Zachary Franco and Sam Llinares to turn a 9-8 UMass lead into the one-goal deficit Carr erased with his strike.
The win improved Hofstra to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in CAA games while the Minutemen fell to 4-8 on the season with an 0-4 mark in league play.
Brendan Hegarty led the Maroon and White attack with three goals on five shots while six Minutemen, including Carr, added one score each. Gianni Bianchin (one goal, one assist), Grant Consoletti (two assists), Tyler Bogart (one goal, one assist), Dan Muller (one goal, one assist) and Ben Spencer (one goal, one assist) also provided multi-point efforts alongside Hegarty.
The Pride picked up three multi-goal performances as Dylan Alderman, Josh Byrne and Llinares scored twice each. Alderman and Llinares helped out on one Hofstra goal apiece for three-point games.
Hegarty and Rak combined for a quick two-goal lead only 14 seconds into the game. Noah Rak, who finished 11-for-18 on faceoffs, won the opening draw and raced to the Hofstra cage for an unassisted tally only six seconds in.
Rak bested Kris Clark on the next faceoff and drew in the Pride defense before he dished to a waiting Hegarty on the doorstep for Hegarty's first tally and a 2-0 margin.
After the Pride responded with back-to-back conversions, Hegarty pushed the Minutemen in front, 3-2 with his second goal of the first quarter at the nine-minute, 28-second mark of the frame.
Hegarty's third tally did not come until midway through the third quarter, when the junior scored as part of a three-goal Maroon and White scoring streak. Consoletti fed a pass to Bianchin for the man-up goal that sparked the run and made it 7-6 Hofstra with 9:28 remaining in the third.
Hegarty converted at the left post on a short dish from Muller with 6:57 remaining in the third before Muller struck for one of his own and an 8-7 Minuteman lead nearly five minutes later.
Rak added five groundballs, tied with Shane Rinkus for the most in the game. Rinkus added one of the team's 10 caused turnovers while close defensemen Kyle Karaska and Kevin Porzelt added two a piece.
Jack Concannon earned the win in the cage as he provided 12 saves for the Pride opposite Sconone.
The Minutemen conclude their season at Drexel (5-8, 1-3) with a Fri., April 29 game beginning at 6 p.m.
