NEWARK, Del. - Massachusetts men's lacrosse faltered in its first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season with a 9-7 loss at Delaware on Saturday afternoon despite 13 saves from freshman goalie Sean Sconone and a pair of goals from classmate Tyler Bogart.
Gianni Bianchin, Buddy Carr, Grant Consoletti, Brendan Hegarty and Isaac Paparo scored once apiece while Bianchin and Hegarty tallied multi-point performances as each contributed an assist. Dan Muller and Ben Spencer rounded out the scorers as they each helped out on one tally.
Bob Fahey led the defensive effort in front of Sconone -- a first-time starter in the cage -- with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sconone helped his own cause with three groundballs and one caused turnover.
Tom Meyers and Noah Rak split faceoff duties as Meyers won 6-of-11 with a groundball while Rak went 4-for-9 with two groundballs. Paparo, who saw increased time at long-stick midfield following an injury to Tyler Weeks, had two groundballs to go with his two points. Shane Rinkus caused one Delaware turnover and grabbed two groundballs splitting time at the spot with Paparo.
Dean DiSimone led the Blue Hens with four points on three goals and an assist. Connor Frisina added two scores while Anthony Disanzo tallied once and assist on another goal for a two-point day. Parker Ferrigan started in goal and provided 10 saves.
Massachusetts falls to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in CAA games with the loss while Delaware improves to 4-7 with a win in its first CAA game of the season.
A Delaware four-goal run turned a 5-5 tie game through three quarters into a comfortable lead for the home side by the late stages of the fourth. However, the Minutemen made one final push to tie in the last two minutes of the game.
After DiSimone secured the hat trick with a goal at the two minute, 16 second mark, Carr scored on a pass from X by Hegarty to cut it to 9-6 only 16 seconds later. Meyers won the next faceoff and pushed the groundball to Paparo for Paparo to scoop, wind up and score with 1:49 to go.
Massachusetts added another faceoff victory, gained possession with 90 seconds to play and pumped in three shots. However, after two missed their marks, Ferrigan knocked down a Bianchin try with 39 seconds remaining to end the comeback attempt.
The Maroon and White trailed the Blue Hens by two goals with two minutes to play in the first half, but converted two-in-a-row to even play at five-apiece.
Bogart scored at the crease on a feed from Bianchin with 60 seconds to play in the second quarter while Hegarty found the back of the net through a pass from Paparo's stick 4:35 into the third stanza.
The consecutive tallies by Bogart and Hegarty ended a three-goal Delaware run the Blue Hens used to push in front for the first time. DiSimone, Disano and Frisina scored in the streak, which lasted just under seven minutes.
Bogart needed only 21 seconds into his first collegiate start for his first goal of the game. After Paparo and Meyers battled four Blue Hens for possession of the faceoff, Meyers knocked it forward to Bogart, who scooped and fired for the tally.
After Bogart's goal on the first UMass shot of the day, Ferrigan settled in and made five saves in the frame as the Blue Hens and Minutemen battled to a 2-2 tie through one quarter.
