Pitching Holds Strong in Doubleheader Split at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. - University of Massachusetts softball topped Belmont but fell to Ole Miss on Saturday in the second day of the Red and Blue Classic in Oxford, Miss. UMass moves to 4-8 on the season.
Game One
Sophomore Meg Colleran allowed just three hits and struck out four batters as Massachusetts softball topped the Belmont Bruins, 6-0.
UMass had 10 hits by seven players in the win. Redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza, freshman Erin Stacevicz and senior Taylor Carbone provided two hits each for the Minutewomen.
The Minutewomen got on the board early, scoring a run in the first inning. Cozza led the game off with a single and would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stacevicz. Carbone followed up with a single to score the runner.
The Minutewomen added three more runs in the second inning, all with two outs. Freshman Kaycee Carbone walked and would score on a Cozza double to left-center field. Stacevicz delivered an RBI single and would later score on a Kaitlin Stavinoha single.
The fifth inning saw UMass add two runs to their lead, when Stavinoha and T. Carbone each scored in the frame. Stavinoha and Carbone led off the inning with back-to-back doubles. Carbone would score later in the inning off of a wild pitch.
Colleran threw her second complete-game shutout in as many outings. She logged 106 pitches, the second-most of the season. Her season ERA dipped to 1.99 with the outing against Belmont.
Game Two
T. Carbone threw a six innings and allowed just one run but the Minutewomen fell to the Ole Miss Rebels, 1-0.
Carbone allowed nine hits over her six innings of work and struck out three Ole Miss batters. Her only blemish came in the fifth inning when Rebels’ freshman Hailey Lunderman led off the inning with a bunt single. She moved to third following two-straight groundouts and scored on an infield single in the gap between third base and shortstop.
Freshman Kaitlin Stavinoha led off the seventh inning with a single, but was erased via a fielder’s choice. The rally ended when senior Lindsey Zenk grounded out to shortstop.
The Minutewomen also threatened in the fourth inning. Stacevicz led off with a single and stole second base. She would move to third when freshman Krista Jacobs threw a wild pitch. Jacobs would recover and force junior Tara Klee to flyout to end the UMass threat.
Massachusetts is back in action when it takes on Penn State on Sunday, at 11 a.m., in the third and final day of the Red and Blue Classic, hosted by Ole Miss.
