November 09, 2016 | Men's Soccer

Fourth-seeded Minutemen take on fifth-seed VCU at 2 p.m.

AMHERST, Mass. - The Atlantic 10 Tournament officially gets underway this Thursday, Nov. 10 at Davidson College with the fourth-seeded UMass men's soccer team taking on fifth-seed VCU at 2 p.m. All matches of the A-10 Tournament will streamed online for free on the A-10 Digitial Network with the championship game being televised live by the American Sports Network (ASN).

Tickets for all rounds of the A-10 Tournament will be available at Alumni Stadium each day of the tournament. For ticket prices, visit the Men's Soccer Championship Central at www.Atlantic10.com.

For the Minutemen (7-8-3 overall, 4-2-2 A-10), this marks the 14th time UMass has qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament with a 7-10-3 record. UMass won the tournament title in 2001 and 2007, while advancing to the championship game six times overall including 1992, 1994, 1995, and 2008. It also marks the first time since the 2007 and 2008 seasons that the Minutemen have qualified for the A-10 Tournament in back-to-back seasons. The Minutemen finished tied for fourth last season, but were the No. 5 seed due to tie-breaker rules.

Thursday marks the second time UMass and VCU (6-9-3, 4-3-1) have met this season. The Minutemen won the regular-season match-up at Rudd Field thanks to a Golden Goal from Josh Jess in overtime. The Rams reached the A-10 Championship match last season.

UMass closed out the second half of the season with a 7-3-2 mark including a home league record of 3-0-1. For the first time since being affiliated with the A-10 in men's soccer, the Minutemen did not allow a single goal in any home league contest this year.

That run helped build UMass into the league's No. 1 defense allowing just four goals in eight matches for a 0.47 goals-against-average with five shutouts.

The winner will play in Friday's semifinal round game at 5 p.m. against the winner of the No. 1 seed Saint Louis/No. 8 seed Dayton match.

The second semifinal match, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, will feature the winners of Fordham/Duquesne and La Salle/Rhode Island. The championship final will be played Sunday at noon on ASN. The championship winner will earn the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
