Late VCU Goal Knocks Men's Soccer Out of A-10 Tournament

Rams win quarterfinal match 2-1 in overtime with game winner in 99th minute.

DAVIDSON, N.C. - VCU scored in the 99th minute to defeat the UMass men's soccer team 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Davidson's Alumni Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The loss ends the Minutemen's season with a 7-9-3 overall record.

Each of the Rams (7-9-3) goals came late in the match. Jorge Herranz scored with 25 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, while Rafael Santos scored a rainbow chip shot with just over a minute left in overtime for the win.

Alex DeSantis notched UMass' goal in the 20th minute as UMass held a 1-0 lead the for the bulk of the match.

Despite being outshot 19-to-3 for the match, UMass was able to force the bulk of VCU's shots to be taken from outside the 18-yard box. The defense was able to stay composed to clear out any dangerous opportunities until the Rams capitalized late.

All three of UMass' shots came in the first half with the Minutemen able to build several sustained offensive possessions. Just 21 seconds before DeSantis' goal, Mark Dunphy nearly put UMass up as he rang a shot off the cross bar. Ty Goncalves was able to collect the ball and put a cross into the box where DeSantis redirected for the goal.

As the first half closed, VCU nearly equalized in the final minute when Jason McGlothern hit the crossbar, but the Minutemen were able to head into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Rams continued to pressure UMass in the second half culminating in one final push during the final minute of play. Herranz served a corner kick towards the far post where Brandon Eaton was able to poke a loose ball through traffic and a screened Jorge Becerra to force overtime.

UMass attacked early in the overtime period, but it was the Rams who found the golden goal in the 99th minute when Santos floated a chip shot into the upper right corner of the goal for the win.

Becerra finished the match with four saves, while his counterpart Pierre Gardan was not credited with any for the Rams.
