Minutemen qualify for A-10 Tournament; find out draw later tonight.
PHILADELPHIA - A late first half goal proved the difference maker as La Salle defeated the UMass men's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in the regular-season finale. Despite the loss, UMass has still qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament and will find out its final seeding later tonight following the late league matches.
The Minutemen (7-8-3, 4-2-2 A-10) entered the match ranked second in the A-10 standings. La Salle (10-7-1, 5-3-0) moved into second after the win moving UMass into third place. Four late matches will kick off on Saturday night at 7 p.m. with the final order of the top-eight decided by those results. The league will announced the tournament field later tonight.
In Saturday's match, Matt Robinson scored his third of the season in the 32nd minute of play following a Zach Rutherford throw-in from the sideline.
UMass had four quality chances to get on the scoreboard prior to the goal, however, La Salle keeper Mike Kirk made saves on each. Kirk finished the match with six saves total.
In the second half, the Minutemen's best chance to equalize came in the 67th minute on a header by Christian Labeck off a corner kick service. Kirk was positioned correctly to make the save upholding the Explorers lead.
For his part, UMass keeper Jorge Becerra tied his career-high with nine saves on the day to keep the deficit at just one.
The Explorers held a 21-to-8 advantage in shots on their Senior Day and a 3-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
Though the loss snapped a three-match win streak for UMass, the Minutemen did close out the season with a 7-3-2 mark over their last 12 games. UMass will qualifiy for the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the second consecutive year marking the first time since the 2007 and 2008 seasons to do so. This year's tournament will be hosted by Davidson with the winner receiving the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
