Hockey Adds Lagunov to Recruiting Class

November 16, 2016 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has added 6-0, 180-pound forward Philip Lagunov to its recruiting class, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Wednesday. Lagunov joins forward Mitchell Chaffee, defenseman Mario Ferraro, forward John Leonard, defenseman Cale Makar and goaltender Matthew Murray as the sixth student-athlete to sign a National Letter of Intent with the Minutemen during the November early signing period.

"Philip is a hard-nosed, skilled smooth skating forward that will be able to play in all situations for us," said Carvel. "He has quick hands and the ability to make plays at high speed. Philip is quick along walls and strong on the puck. He is versatile as he can play on the wing, but is also comfortable in the middle, being strong on draws."

Lagunov, who was named NHL Central Scouting's preliminary Players to Watch List for 2016-17, is currently in his second season with the Burlington Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists over 23 games. Over 91 career OJHL games thus far, he has logged 68 career points (30g, 38a) and was selected to compete in the 2016 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge.
