Colonials use pair of first half goals to earn win at rainy Rudd Field.
AMHERST, Mass. - A pair of first half goals gave George Washington a 2-0 win over the UMass women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at a rainy Rudd Field. The Colonials scored in the 21st and 27th minutes and then held the Minutewomen at bay for the balance of the match.
UMass (2-8-1, 0-4-0 A-10) will hit the road next week for a pair of matches at Davidson on Thursday, Oct. 13 (7 p.m.), and at Rhode Island on Sunday, Oct. 16 (1 p.m.).
Lina Proska opened the scoring for George Washington (8-4-1, 2-1-1 A-10) with a heavy shot from 15 yards out that tucked inside the far post. MacKenzie Cowley sent a nice centering pass from the left flank to Proska to set up the shot.
Six minutes later, it was Cowley who finished the play for GW as she cleaned up a loose ball just outside the far post again to put the Colonials up 2-0. Proska fired a shot on target, but UMass keeper Cassidy Babin was able to make the save. The ball caromed towards Cowley where she one-timed a shot into the goal.
UMass managed four shots and two corner kicks in the balance of the first half, but went into halftime down 2-0.
In the second half, the Minutewomen managed six more corners and five shots. George Washington keeper Miranda Horn was equal to the task, however, making saves on each of the strikes.
For the match, UMass outshot GW 11-to-9 and held an 8-to-4 advantage in corner kicks. Babin finished the day with two saves, while Horn made six.
