George Mason Uses Overtime Goal to Defeat Women's Soccer 2-1
October 06, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Patriots score gamewinner in 107th minute of play.
AMHERST, Massachusetts - Emily Littell scored in the 107th minute of play giving George Mason a 2-1 double-overtime win over the UMass women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. Daniela Alvarez scored for the Minutewomen in the 52nd minute before Mason's Alex Myers tied the match in the 69th minute.
UMass will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 9 against George Washington at Rudd Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and admission is free to all. The match will be the team's annual Breast Cancer Awareness game with fans encouraged to wear pink.
Littell's goal came after UMass keeper Cassidy Babin initially made a save on a Myers shot. The loose ball pinballed inside the 18-yard box before the defense was able to attempt a clearing attempt. The clearing pass was intercepted by Littell who dribbled four yards and then loosed a snaking shot through traffic towards the right post and past a diving Babin.
Alvarez opened the scoring with a 40-yard bomb on a free kick attempt following a Patriots foul. Her kick on target made its way past Mason keeper Kirsten Glad thanks in part to a header attempt by Jenna Thomas. Thomas was able to occupy a Patriots defender and placed herself in front of Glad screening the goalkeeper from the shot.
Myers answered the goal 17 minutes later with a blast off a free kick of her own. Her shot on the restart was placed inside the near post and had enough steam on it to go into the goal despite a leaping Babin getting both hands on the shot in a deflection attempt.
The Minutewomen had several chances to go back ahead or equalize. Following Myers goal, Natalie Perrusault carried the ball down the right flank before loosing a shot towards the near post. The shot was deflected and then cleared off the line before going in by Mason's Kaila Williams.
In the first overtime period, Gabriela Kenyon nealry won the match for UMass when she was able to get behind the George Mason defense but her shot sailed just high of the target. UMass notched three shots in the first two minutes of the second overtime, but could not find the game-winner.
Babin made a huge save in the second overtime with a save on a hard-struck header by Abby Downey on a corner kick to keep the match tied.
