October 04, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Minutemen improve to 3-1-1 over last five matches with victory.
AMHERST, Massachusetts - Henry Steinkamp's goal in the 55th minute stood as the difference maker leading the UMass men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Central Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The win improved UMass to 3-1-1 over the last five matches and closed out the non-conference portion of the Minutemen's schedule.
Overall, the result improved UMass to 3-6-2 on the year, while Central Connecticut dropped to 1-7-2 overall. The Minutemen will resume Atlantic 10 play on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Fordham (1 p.m.) after starting league play with a draw against Dayton last Saturday.
Steinkamp's goal was assisted by Ty Goncalves who sent a through ball from the top center of the 18-yard box to the Los Alamos, N.M., native who had crashed down the right flank. The junior midfielder took the pass through traffic before firing a rising shot from just outside the six-yard box on the near post into the upper 90 of the far post.
The goal punctuated a flurry of activity for the Minutemen who had four shots in just over a two minute span. The stretch started with a Casey Hamill shot ringing off the far post.
CCSU tried to find the equalizer in the final 16 minutes of play earning three corners but managed just two shots of which one was blocked and the other sailed high of target.
The Blue Devils tried to rebuild the offense for one last attempt in the final five minutes, but the Minutemen were able to clear the ball back into their offensive zone before working the clock with a corner kick in the final minute.
For the match, UMass outshot Central Connecticut 15-to-9, while CCSU held a 6-to-4 edge in corner kicks. UMass keeper Jorge Becerra made three saves, while CCSU split keepers with Nick Valleca making four saves in the first half and Carson D'Ambrosio making two in the second.
The shutout marked the third of the year for the Minutemen - all coming in the last five matches. With clean sheets against Dayton and CCSU, the result was also the first time since August 2012 that UMass pitched back-to-back shutouts.
