Boino Goal Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Win Over Bonnies
October 12, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Minutemen run unbeaten streak to four matches.
AMHERST, Mass. - Kevin Boino's goal in the 69th minute proved the difference maker as the UMass men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to four matches with a 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The clean sheet marked the third straight for the Minutemen marking the first time since 2011 to do so.
With the win, UMass improved to 4-6-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies fell to 2-9-2 overall, and 1-2-1 in league play. Over the last six matches, the Minutemen are now 4-1-1 with four shutouts included. UMass will next take to the road to face Davidson on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
Wednesday's match saw a scoreless first half with neither team able to capitalize any opportunities.
Both teams opened the second half with more opportunities, including UMass earning the first corner kick of the match in the 50th minute, but could not find the go-ahead goal early.
Boino's goal was set-up in transition as Henry Steinkamp carried the ball through the midfield before slotting a pass from 25 yards out towards the near post. Boino made a run from the far side to collect the pass just outside the six-yard box. Bonnies keeper Luke Iacobellis charged off his line to cut the angle, but Boino was able to get his right foot on a solid shot towards the back post for the goal.
The tally marked the fourth career goal for the sophomore who scored twice last year at St. Bonaventure in a 2-1 win for the Minutemen. Three of his goals in two years have stood as game winners.
UMass spent much of the final minutes looking to run clock with long sideline and corner possessions. The Bonnies did have one final attempt to equalize on a heavy shot from Nikko Richards, but Minutemen keeper Jorge Becerra was able to make the save to preserve the lead.
Becerra finished the match with seven saves, while Iacobellis made three for the Bonnies.
The Minutemen held a slight 11-to-10 edge in shots and a 3-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
