Senior Day As Men's Soccer Hosts George Washington on Saturday

Key A-10 match-up as both Minutemen and Colonials looking to secure postseason position.
AMHERST, Mass. – Coming off of a 1-0 overtime win last weekend against VCU, the UMass men's soccer team returns to Rudd Field this Saturday, Oct. 29 (12 p.m.) for the Minutemen's final regular-season home match to take on George Washington. The Minutemen are currently tied with the Colonials in the 8th and final A-10 playoff spot, and with the A-10 berth at stake this game may be the deciding factor.
Prior to the match, the UMass men's soccer team will honor the 2016 senior class of Jorge Becerra, Ty Goncalves, Josh Jess and Matt Pease.
Following Saturday's contest, the Minutemen will finish the regular season with two contests on the road. On Wednesday the Minutemen will head to the Bronx to face Fordham on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) before heading to Philadelphia on Saturday, Nov. 5th (1 p.m.) to take on La Salle.
All matches will be streamed on the Atlantic 10 Digitial Network with live stats available as well. Admission on Saturday at Rudd Field is free to all.
UMass (5-7-3, 2-1-2 A-10) is coming off a 1-0 overtime win against VCU last Saturday. UMass downed the Rams 1-0, when Jess netted his third goal of the season with a header off of a Goncalves corner kick in the game's 99th minute. The score was the second goal of the week for Jess.
The Minutemen currently sit tied for eighth in the league standings with eight points but have one game fewer played than George Washington who also has eight points. Fordham (6-5-3, 3-1-1 A-10) is in a three-way tied for third with ten points, while La Salle (8-7-0, 3-3-0 A-10) are tied for sixth with nine points.
Alex DeSantis continues to lead UMass in overall points with eight on two goals and four assists. Ty Goncalves now has the team lead in goals with three and is tied with Henry Steinkamp for second in overall points with seven. With Jess's goal against VCU, he moves into fourth on the team with five total points. 10 different Minutemen have tallied goals on the year.
Defensively, UMass has improved drastically since the start of the season. Keeper Jorge Becerra posted his fourth shutout of the season on Saturday, now tied with Duquesne for the lead league in shutouts. For the year, Becerra now has a 1.50 goals-against-average and a 0.747 save percentage as the keeper of record.
Overall, it's been a key stretch for the Minutemen who have posted a 5-2-2 mark in the last nine outings as the regular-season winds down.
George Washington has matched UMass' hot streak with a similar 5-2-2 record over its last nine contests. The Colonials are led by Garrett Heine, who leads the league with goals and points in A-10 play (17 points, 6g, 5a). Dylan Lightbourn trails behind with four goals on the season, trailed by Oliver Curry and Christian Lawal who have three goals apiece. In goal, Sophomore Thor Arne Höfs has started 15 of 16 matches with a 0.61 GAA and a 0.863 save percentage.
