O'Dwyer Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Win Over George Washington
October 29, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Minutemen post first-ever season of holding A-10 foes scoreless at Rudd Field.
AMHERST, Mass. - Connor O'Dwyer's goal in the 19th minute proved the difference maker as the UMass men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over George Washington on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Senior Day win marked the first time in program history that the Minutemen have pitched shutouts in all of its home league games since the Atlantic 10 began sponsoring men's soccer in 1987.
UMass posted a 3-0-1 mark in A-10 play at Rudd Field capped by Saturday's result. The surging Minutemen have gone 6-2-2 over the last 10 games and are now in the top-half of the league standings.
Prior to the match, UMass (6-7-3, 3-1-2 A-10) honored its senior class of Jorge Becerra, Ty Goncalves, Josh Jess and Matt Pease. The quartet are looking to lead the Minutemen back to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the second straight season.
UMass began attacking early against the Colonials (7-5-5, 2-3-2 A-10) highlighted by a Mark Dunphy header in transition that was on target past GW keeper Thor Arne, but was saved off the line by a defender on the back post.
Just 14 minutes later, the Minutemen jumped on the scoreboard first when O'Dwyer headed home a service by Goncalves on a free kick. Two minutes later, Dunphy and Alex DeSantis nearly added another goal, but Dunphy's shot was saved and DeSantis' attempt skidded just wide right.
George Washington looked to equalize in the second half, but the defense, led by Jess, continued to clear the ball from any danger to preserve the clean sheet.
Becerra finished the day with one save, while Arne made four for the Colonials.
UMass held an 18-to-5 advantage in shots for the match, while the Colonials had a 4-to-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Minutemen will close out the regular season next week with a pair of road matches. UMass will play at Fordham on Wednesday afternoon before heading to La Salle on Saturday.
