October 22, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Josh Jess heads home corner kick goal in 100th minute on Saturday.
AMHERST, Mass. - With 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Josh Jess headed home the game-winning goal off a corner kick to give the UMass men's soccer team a 1-0 win over VCU on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The win also marked the fifth shutout for the defense and keeper Jorge Becerra as the Minutemen continue their strong play as the regular-season winds down.
The win improves UMass to 5-7-3 overall and 2-1-2 in Atlantic 10 play with three games remaining on the schedule. VCU fell to 5-7-3 overall and 3-2-1 in league play. The Minutemen will have the week off before returning to action next Saturday, Oct. 29 at Rudd Field against George Washington.
Jess' goal was set up by a corner kick service from Ty Goncalves who placed the ball in front of the far post. Jess was able to dip down through the traffic whipping the header past VCU keeper Pierre Gardan (3 saves) for the score.
For Jess, the tally marks his third of the season, a career-high and the best on the team currently, while Goncalves is now tied with Alex DeSantis for the team lead in overall points at eight. It was also the second goal this week for the defender as Jess tallied UMass' lone goal in a 2-1 loss on Wednesday night at Rhode Island.
For the match, UMass held a slight 10-to-9 edge in shots over the Rams and an 8-to-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Jorge Herranz had a late opportunity for the Rams in the 74th minute on a header from a free kick that glanced over the cross bar.
