THE LEAD: University of Massachusetts hockey used a strong start and four points from the squad's freshmen to propel the squad to a 3-2 win over Army West Point on Friday evening at the Mullins Center. With the victory, the Minutemen move to 2-1-0 on the season, while handing the Black Knights (2-1-1) their first loss of the season.

FIRST PERIOD:
UMass' first scoring chance of the night came last than a minute into the opening period as freshman Jonny Lazarus was denied on attempt streaking through the slot. Freshman Griff Jeszka then put the Minutemen on the board at the 8:29 mark, redirecting in a shot from the point by senior Marc Hetnik with sophomore Kurt Keats earning an assist on the play, as well. In the final minute of the frame, junior Patrick Lee found the top left corner of the net off a feed from classmate Dominic Trento and Lazarus at 19:20 to push the margin to 2-0.

SECOND PERIOD:
After UMass outshot Army, 13-1 in the first period, the Black Knights turned the tables with a 13-4 shot advantage in the second, though the Minutemen came away with the only goal of the period. Freshman Niko Hildenbrand extended UMass' lead to 3-0 with his tally from Lazarus and Trento at the 3:11 mark.

THIRD PERIOD:
The Black Knights converted on a pair of 5x3 power plays early in the third to make it a one-goal game. Ryan Nick put Army on the board 3:36 into the frame and Clint Carlisle followed with the squad's second tally just 53 seconds later. However, the Minutemen's defense held strong the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UMass' freshmen provided four of the nine points in the contest, including Lazarus' first career multi-point game (two assists) and Hildenbrand's first collegiate goal.
- Lazarus has at least one point in each of the Minutemen's first three games. Lazarus, along with linemates Lee and Trento, have combined for 12 of UMass' 30 points thus far on the season. Trento (two assists), picked up his first multi-point game of the year, as well.
- Freshman Ryan Wischow made his third start of the season in net and picked up his second victory (2-0-0), making 23 saves on the night. Army goaltender Parker Gahagen totaled 22 stops.
- UMass and Army finished even in shots at 25 apiece, while the Minutemen won 32 of 63 (50.8%) faceoffs, led by Jeszka (8 for 12, 66.7%) and Steven Iacobellis (17 for 27, 63%).

UP NEXT: The Minutemen will head to Hamden, Conn., for their first road game of the season this Tue., Oct. 25, where the squad will face No. 4/3 Quinnipiac in a 7 p.m. contest.
