Women's Soccer and Duquesne Battle to 0-0 Draw

October 20, 2016 | Women's Soccer

Defenses stand tall as Minutewomen and Dukes fight through two-overtime contest.

AMHERST, Mass. - Keeper Cassidy Babin made nine saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season as the UMass women's soccer team battled Duquesne to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. Babin's nine saves were a season-high while the draw marked the second straight for the Minutewomen.

UMass (2-9-3, 0-5-2 A-10) will return to action on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field to host VCU. The match will be the program's Senior Day and Alumni Day while kicking off at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are free to all.

Babin was pressed into action early in the match picking up a pair of saves in the first four minutes of the contest. Both teams traded chances in the first half with the Minutewomen having a pair in the final five minutes of play. In the 44th minute, Rebeca Frisk had one of the better opportunities, but Dukes keeper Kyra Murphy was there for the save.

The second half saw Duquesne (9-4-3, 5-1-1 A-10) control the bulk of the offensive possessions highlighted by six corner kick chances which the Minutewomen were able to turn away.

The Dukes best chance to score came in the 86th minute when Katie O'Connor received the ball down the left flank before sending a heavy strike towards the far post. Babin was able to get a finger on the shot deflecting the ball just enough so that as it rebounded down and back off the post where it trickled parallel to the goalline without going over. UMass was able to clear the ball from danger to force the overtime sessions.

Duquesne was able to build an offensive push late in the first overtime with back-to-back shots in the 100th minute, but Babin made another save on the second with 13 seconds to go. The Dukes earned a corner from the deflected save, but were unable to play the ball dangerously before time expired.

UMass was able to produce several counter-attacks in the overtime periods, but could not connect for any chances on frame.

Babin made her final save in the second overtime and the defense blocked a second in the 110th minute to finish the day in a draw.

Duquesne's keeper Kyra Murphy finished with four saves on the day.

The Dukes outshot UMass 21-to-9 and held an 8-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
