Senior Day Shutout as Women's Soccer Bests VCU 3-0

Minutewomen honor senior class with highest scoring game of season.

AMHERST, Mass. - After honoring its 2016 senior class with a pregame ceremony on Saturday afternoon, the UMass women's soccer team produced its highest scoring game of the year and its sixth shutout with a 3-0 win over VCU at Rudd Field. In fitting fashion, the game's opening goal came from senior Megan Burke thanks to an assist by classmate Daniela Alvarez.

The Minutewomen honored seven players prior to the match with Alyssa Fratarcangeli, Laura Johns, Jackie Miller, Jenny Scro and Julia Weithofer being recognized alongside Alvarez and Burke.

The ceremony produced a spark in the offense as UMass (3-9-3, 1-5-2 A-10) jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play when Alvarez found Burke for the opening goal of the match.

Gabriela Kenyon pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute when she was able to tap in a loose ball following a UMass throw-in from the near sideline. After the initial toss, the ball could not be cleared inside the goalie box. At the far post, Kenyon was able to get a foot on the ball sending the shot through traffic for the goal.

Salma Anastasio scored the final goal of the match in the 55th minute when she one-timed a mid-air cross sent into the box from Paige Koslowski on the right flank.

Keeper Cassidy Babin earned the shuout making seven saves for the Minutewomen defense. Her counterpart Audrey Sanderson made three saves for VCU (7-9-1, 3-5-0 A-10).

The match very nearly had a different feel as the Rams hit the post in the 13th minute on a shot by Maddi Santo just before UMass was able to transition back down the field to set-up Burke's goal.

For the match, VCU held a 14-to-9 advantage in shots and a 6-to-1 edge in corner kicks. Six of the 14 shots for the Rams came in the final 20 minutes of the match as they looked to break-up the shutout.
