Goncalves PK Goal Earns Men's Soccer 1-1 Draw at Davidson
October 15, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Minutemen run unbeaten streak to five matches; now 4-1-2 in last seven.
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Ty Goncalves scored on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute helping the UMass men's soccer team earn a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Davidson on Saturday night at Alumni Field. The Minutemen extended their unbeaten streak to five matches and are now 4-1-2 over the last seven outings.
UMass will return to action at longtime New England rival Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 19 (7 p.m.) before returning home to Rudd Field on Saturday, Oct. 22 to host VCU. The VCU match will also be Alumni Weekend for the men's and women's soccer programs.
In Saturday's match, the two teams battled through a defensive-minded first half with both sides only registering two shots each.
The Wildcats (3-9-1, 1-2-1) broke the deadlock when Maxi Pragnell scored in the 59th minute.
UMass (4-6-3, 1-0-2) was able to equalize in the 82nd minute after a foul inside the 18-yard box earned the Minutemen a penalty kick. Ty Goncalves scored on the attempt as he shot to his left sneaking the ball under a diving Andrew Kenneson who guessed the correct side for the strike. The goal was the second penalty-kick conversion for Goncalves who also scored an overtime penalty kick to win the Hartford match in September.
Davidson finished the match with a 9-to-6 edge in shots and a 6-to-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Jorge Becerra made two saves in goal for the Minutemen, while Kenneson made one for the Wildcats.
