October 19, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Rams snap Minutemen’s five-match unbeaten streak Wednesday night.
KINGSTON, R.I. – A late second half goal started a rally for the Minutemen, but UMass was unable to force overtime, despite several late chances, falling 2-1 to Rhode Island on Wednesday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 4-7-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island improves to 5-9-1 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.
UMass will return to action on Saturday afternoon to host VCU at Rudd Field. The match will be the annual Alumni Weekend for the program with many former players in attendance. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and attendance is free to all.
In Wednesday's match, the Rams were able to get on the scoreboard early after a missed clearing opportunity by UMass inside its own 18-yard box. Ryan Bailey was able to possess the loose ball before find Stavros Zarokostas who shot towards the near post for the goal giving the Rams a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.
UMass was able to generate three shots after that and earned a corner kick, but trailed the Rams 1-0 at halftime.
Nine minutes into the second stanza, URI used a nice give-and-go play in transition between Bailey and Carlo Davids to get behind the defense. Bailey sent a centering pass towards the far post where Danny Apajee was able to connect for the 2-0 lead. UMass keeper Jorge Becerra was just a hair late on the diving recovery as the shot when just under his outstretched hand.
Josh Jess pulled the Minutemen within a goal in the 73rd minute when he put home a loose ball from a Brandon Merklin throw-in from the far sideline cutting Rhody's lead to 2-1.
The Minutemen continued to pressure the Rams, but were unable to find an equalizer to force overtime. Ty Goncalves had a solid bid in the 87th minute, but his shot was wide of frame. UMass mounted one final effort in the last minute of play culminating with a header by Merkin that was cleared away just before reaching the goalline.
Becerra finished the match with four saves for the Minutemen.
For the game, Rhode Island held a 15-to-6 advantage in shots and a 5-to-1 advantage in corners.
